Special Purpose Transformer

Our Special Purpose Transformers are custom-built to meet specific client needs across various industries, including mining, chemical processing, and heavy manufacturing. These transformers are designed for non-standard voltage ratings, unique environmental conditions, or specialised application requirements. Whether you need transformers that operate in hazardous environments or those tailored for specific load conditions, we deliver efficient, durable, and adaptable solutions. By working closely with our clients, we ensure that each transformer is designed to meet the precise specifications, ensuring optimal performance and long-lasting reliability.

The engineering process begins with the electromagnetic and thermal design of the core and windings. This is carried out using standardised calculation tools developed in-house by our Design Department over the years. These tools support specialised analyses such as short-circuit impedance of phase-shifted multi-winding transformers, eddy current and stray loss calculations due to harmonics, hot-spot identification in windings and structural components, mechanical stress analysis during short circuits, and insulation evaluation. Each transformer is delivered with a comprehensive set of technical documents, including fabrication drawings, high-voltage/low-voltage connection diagrams, auxiliary circuit and schematic wiring diagrams, cooling system schematics, and user manuals.

Transformer Type Description
Dual Input Voltage Transformers These transformers are designed to accept two different input voltage levels (e.g., 11 kV & 33 kV, 22 kV & 11 kV, 11 kV & 6.6 kV), providing flexibility and compatibility in varied power distribution systems without requiring separate transformer units.
Hermetically Sealed Transformers Hermetically sealed transformers, equipped with corrugated radiator panels, are designed for maintenance-free operation. The sealed design prevents moisture and air ingress, enhancing reliability, especially in harsh or remote environments.
Completely Self Protected (CSP) Transformers CSP transformers have integrated protection features such as circuit breakers, surge arresters, and fuses. These self-contained units provide enhanced safety and reliability, making them ideal for distribution systems in residential or rural areas.
Auto Transformers Auto transformers use a single winding that serves both primary and secondary functions, making them more compact and efficient for voltage step-up or step-down applications where electrical isolation is not required.
Isolation Transformers Isolation transformers are primarily used for electrical isolation between the input and output circuits. Commonly applied in sensitive instruments and apparatus, they help protect equipment by isolating it from power surges, electrical noise, and ground loops, ensuring safe and stable operation.
Scott Connected Transformers Scott-connected transformers are used to convert three-phase power into a two-phase output. This configuration is ideal for applications requiring two-phase supply from a standard three-phase system, such as certain industrial processes.
Test Transformers Test transformers are specialised units used for high-voltage testing applications. This includes induced over-voltage tests, insulation testing, and dielectric strength verification of electrical components and systems, ensuring compliance with safety and performance standards.
Earthing Transformers Earthing transformers are used as protective devices in power systems. They provide a neutral grounding point in systems where one is unavailable, enabling effective fault current path during line-to-ground faults and improving overall system protection and stability.
ITDT/CDT (Inverter Duty / Converter Duty Transformers) These transformers are designed specifically for solar energy applications. They are optimised to handle the unique requirements of photovoltaic systems, including high harmonic content and variable load conditions, ensuring reliable performance and efficient energy conversion from DC to AC.
Furnace Transformers Furnace transformers supply power to electric furnaces, especially induction furnaces. Designed to handle high currents and frequent load fluctuations, they are robust and capable of withstanding the harsh conditions typical in steel plants and foundries.
Rectifier Transformers Rectifier transformers are used in applications where AC power needs to be converted into DC. They are commonly found in electrochemical processes, traction systems, and DC motor drives and are built to handle the high current and voltage requirements associated with rectification.
Reactor Transformers Reactor transformers, often referred to in the context of capacitor transformers, are used in power system protection lines. They help manage voltage regulation, limit fault currents, and control reactive power flow, contributing to system stability and protection.
